Jessica Patterson

Jessica Patterson

Jessica Patterson also represented as The Frequent Artist is a painter/illustrator/graphic designer that currently resides in Louisiana. Her artistic beginnings started at a young age with drawing but at the age of sixteen started painting. Being self-taught enabled her to learn at a steady pace and she often researched all forms of creative content available, such as movies, comics, and of course art history.

Not until more recent timing has The Frequent Artist started to participate in more professional work and coverage with her art featured internationally. Some notable features include publications with Destig magazine, Art International Contemporary Magazine, Contemporary Art Curator Magazine and most recently a listing in Art In America Annual Guide 2022. Several awards for her contributions in art such as Artist of the Year/Top 100 Artist of 2020 [Destig Magazine]; Ambassadors Of The Arts [June 2021-International Prize]; and Art Olympic Prize [December 2021-International Prize]. A few exhibitions include 1st International Biennial of Art in the World in Palermo, Italy at the Effetto Arte Gallery [September 2021].

The future in her artistic endeavors is a grander one as she hopes to make more complex pieces that challenge as well as keep her mind stimulated. As the art continues to grow, she wants to become a better artist while keeping the interest as new as the first time she held a crayon to color a doodle.

What’s your background?

I would say my original start to my artistic journey / exploring technique was as a painter and as the years went on I gravitated towards illustration. I’m self-taught but have attended college for graphic design to expand on my knowledge of newer ways to work. I’ve collectively been working with paint for 23 years and now work professionally with art projects internationally/nationally.

What does it mean to you to win the Collectors Art Prize?

That there’s progress being made in the work that is allowing this moment to happen. It’s always hard to tell if what I envision the pieces to represent share any real emotion with the people that views

them. Winning the Collectors Art Prize is an amazing achievement and I’m always grateful for the recognition. Looking forward to what creative work is coming soon.

What do you think is the role of art in the world today?

I’ve always thought art is a way to communicate ideas, but expression is the requirement. That expression leads in innovation which often contributes to various interactions. I often think of art as the human experience that binds many of us together and a constant cycle of influence/change.

What would it be if you could change one thing about the art world?

Accessibility/ convenience is always the first thing that comes to mind. When I started my creative journey, I had no real exposure to the arts besides seeing a book here or there at a local store but they were rarer finds even back then. According to the subject on which you were drawn to there was always a question to what “art” is. Accessibility coming from a standpoint of not having local book stores or even access to learning about the subject of art and convenience to casually pick up a hobby related to art based on the individual circumstance. Even today I hear people say that art does feel exclusive and realistically for some art is never a real option to explore.

What are your most significant professional achievements?

They’re 3 that come to mind currently. To start my professional art journey would be my first publication with a magazine named, DESTIG in 2019. The magazine helped me reach an audience internationally for the first time. Another achievement happened just last year when I got to do a group exhibition in New York City which up to this point in time I had only done a handful of local showcases. This was a dream come true for various reasons. The last achievement that comes to mind is receiving an award from Italy for my artistic contributions called International Prize Leonardo Da Vinci-Universal Artist. Leonardo Da Vinci is an influential artist that I studied growing up so this was a highlight and inspiration moving forward in my artistic career.

What do you wish to tell viewers about your work that might not come out explicitly? What do you hope to inspire with your artwork?

I’ve always been into telling stories about familiar subject matter but varying in conclusion. Many of my pieces are based around stories of my life from past events and I often contribute color patterns to match with that particular story. If my work does inspire someone I hope that the pieces inspire people to create more and spark creativity in someone that has never tried an art project to try something new. Art leads to many new discoveries and often just starting with nothing but an idea is all you need to start that creative spark.

What advice would you give to the upcoming generation of artists?

Above anything else please have fun with the process of your work. The challenge comes when learning how to frame everything together to make a cohesive work. This is a rewarding time that also is the most valuable to surprise even yourself. Allow for freedoms to happen in how you work opening options for newer ideas. Don’t be afraid to try whatever comes to mind. Record your process in writing or maybe even a simple 1-minute sketch but trust your process.

In what direction would you like to see your career go in the next five years?

Hopefully more features internationally doing exhibitions in galleries and museums. I also would love my work expand to other areas such as books, but I feel in due time that is a definite possibility. The next five years is an expansive time to work where the pieces will become more varied to allow for more ways to create. Overall, I’m ready for many new things coming soon.
