Biography
MAJO PORTILLA is a Netherlands-based worldwide artist with a Latin background who creates abstract, contemporary and figurative meaningful statements of art. Recipient of several international awards, her colourful, bold paintings transmit the vibrancy of her artistic career and have been featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Tatler, and World of Interiors UK, just to name a few. What’s your background?
My Academic background is Business Administration and Behavioral Economics, but for 23 years now, I’ve been painting across the globe, from Amsterdam, Guatemala, USA, Basel, Dubai to Hilversum where I currently reside. .
What does it mean to you to win the Collectors Art Prize?
Winning the Collectors Award means to me an acknowledgement of a life long art career well done and ajustification for the self-doubt, and the hard work that went into winning it. This award makes me feel proud, happy, overwhelmed, and delighted. It gives me validation and boosts my confidence.
What do you think is the role of art in the world today?
The role of art today is to be art a universal way for people to express themselves and share their feelings with the world. Art helps us connect, especially in hard times. Art is a platform to express and live out ourdreams.
What would it be if you could change one thing about the art world?
I would love that people wouldn’t think of it as a luxury good but as an affordable way to tell your story on your wall.
What are your most significant professional achievements?
The Mauritius International Art Fair, Dubai Art Expo, Ras Al Khaima Fine Arts Festival, Carrousel du Louvre Contemporary Art Fair, Fira Internacional d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Art Connects Women Dubai, La Marguttiana Arte Forte Dei Marmi, Museo Diffuso Contemporaneo Italy, Museo Internazionale Italia Arte, Museum of the Americas, SDG Art Collection United Nations Abu Dhabi @UN Hub Expo 2020, Artist 360 Madrid, Contemporary Art Station Madrid and other innumerable collective and solo exhibitions have all been significantly important achievements and propelled my artworks into diverse markets throughout the globe.
What do you wish to tell viewers about your work that might not come out explicitly?
That it all starts with a feeling, with my mood and whatever is going on in my life at the moment.
What do you hope to inspire with your artwork?
A connection with the viewers life.
What advice would you give to the upcoming generation of artists?
To not give up and to enjoy every step of the way required to build a career in this industry. To have an open mind, to try and keep trying!
In what direction would you like to see your career go in the next five years?
I love not only painting but also sharing how to express yourself with art as an avenue to connect with your soul. For me art is therapy and my workshops in my newly opened gallery in Hilversum give me that opportunity. In 5 years I would like to still do a few international exhibitions and fairs, but mostly spend more time in my gallery.
