Miro Frei
Biography
Miro Frei was born 1974 in the small town Aarau in Switzerland. He studied history, geography and German studies at the University of Zurich. In 2007 he exhibited his medium-size pastel and acrylic paintings in his first solo show at the Kraftwerk gallery in Berlin. In 2009 he was asked to participate in the Florence Biennale. There he met Marina Abramovic. He was deeply shocked by her radical language. 2010 he exposed at the Kapfsteig gallery in Zurich. 2013 he participated again in the Florence Biennale. 2014 he organized an international group exhibit at the Kapfsteig gallery. Frei’s installation „Dada is growing up” in 2014 at the artclub in Cologne received attention beyond the art scene.
After the Florence Biennale 2013 he was contacted by several galleries from New York City. He decided to go to the Artifact gallery where he had a great reception. At Dezember and January 2022 he could exhibit at the Kunsthalle Bern, at a Show of the art school F+F. The works of Miro Frei are represented in collections in Berlin, Cologne, Berne, Zurich, Feldmeilen, Lausanne. He works and lives in Zurich and Berlin.
What is your background?
I’m a painter living in Zurich and Berlin. I view myself as an observer of society.
What does it mean to you to win the Collectors Art Prize?
I’m very pleased to receive this prize. It’s a great honor to belong to that group of awarded artists. The quality of artists at Contemporary Art Curator is very high.
What do you think is the role of art in the world today?
Understanding other people and other cultures is so fundamental. Especially in times of conflict, artists need to seek balance.
What would it be if you could change one thing about the art world?
I find it indecent when art is pushed into the role of profit maximization. Making art means always to believe in a better tomorrow.
What are your most significant professional achievements?
My greatest achievement was organizing an international group exhibition in Zurich. And to participate on a group show “51 years of F+F experiment” at the Kunsthalle Berne (Switzerland).
What do you wish to tell viewers about your work that might not come out explicitly? What do you hope to inspire with your art work?
It's dark in the cosmos. Let’s bring some color and life into the world. I life in a rich country. And sometimes I feel that every person is fighting alone. We have so much individuality and only a little sense of belonging. Only a few common goals.
What advice would you give to the upcoming generation of artists?
It’s important to expose and to move on. And not to evaluate whether exhibition takes place in a museum or in an off space. I would wish more solidarity than rivalry among artists.
8)In what direction would you like to see your career go in the next five years?
I like to participate at the Scope art fair Miami Beach or to show my art in London. (I’m looking for collectors who believe in me.)
