Shuai Xu

Biography

Xu Shuai is an artist based in Los Angeles, United States. His work focuses on the exploration of the invisible world, which encompasses the realms of dreams, subconsciousness, different dimensions, and the universe. He employs various mediums and forms of expression, such as oil painting, installations, and land art, to investigate the relationship between human perception and the universe.

In Xu's artistic practice, the circle symbol frequently appears as a representation of the invisible world that he explores. The circle serves as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of life, the wholeness of the universe, and the infinite possibilities of the unknown. Xu draws inspiration from both ancient and contemporary human cosmologies, incorporating them into his visual language to create a unique depiction of the world as he perceives it.

Xu's work is deeply rooted in the philosophy of perception, exploring how the human mind constructs reality and how our sensory experiences shape our understanding of the world. He often blurs the boundaries between the visible and the invisible, inviting the viewer to contemplate the mysterious and the enigmatic.

One of Xu's signature works is a series of oil paintings that depict a dreamlike landscape with floating circles of different sizes and colors. These circles appear to be suspended in mid-air, hovering above the landscape like celestial bodies. The paintings create a sense of otherworldliness, inviting the viewer to contemplate the hidden dimensions of reality.

Xu's installations are primarily indoor pieces of art. These objects are often placed in gallery spaces, creating a harmonious relationship between the man-made and the built environment. Xu's installations blur the boundaries between the human-made and the built environment, inviting the viewer to contemplate the interconnectivity of all things.

On the other hand, Xu's land art pieces are situated in remote outdoor locations such as forests, deserts, and mountains. Xu's land art invites the viewer to contemplate the significance of the circle as a symbol of wholeness and unity in the context of the natural world.

Xu's works offer a unique and holistic perspective on the interconnectivity of all things, inviting the viewer to contemplate the mysteries of existence and the relationship between human perception and the invisible world.

What does it mean to you to win the Collectors Art Prize?

Winning the Collectors Art Prize from Contemporary Art Curator magazine is an incredible honor and a significant achievement for me as an artist. This recognition means a lot to me because it affirms the value and quality of my work in the eyes of art collectors and industry professionals.

As an artist, I am constantly seeking to push the boundaries of creativity and self-expression, and winning this award is a validation of those efforts. It is also a testament to the hard work and dedication that I have put into my art over the years.

What do you think is the role of art in the world today?

I believe that the role of art in the world today is to push boundaries and challenge existing frameworks. As artists, we have a responsibility to explore new frontiers and to constantly push the limits of what is possible. Art has no boundaries or rules, and as such, we are free to experiment and explore new forms, mediums, and ideas.

At its core, art is about curiosity and the desire to explore the unknown. It is about taking risks, breaking rules, and challenging the status quo. Art has the power to inspire, transform, and provoke viewers, encouraging them to see the world in new and different ways.

What would it be if you could change one thing about the art world?

While there are certainly aspects of the current art world that could be improved, I don't necessarily believe that changing any one thing would necessarily bring about more meaningful results. Instead, I prefer to focus on the future and think about what artists can do to make a positive impact on the world to come.

What are your most significant professional achievements?

As an artist, I believe that my most significant professional achievement is my ability to consistently create meaningful works of art. For me, the act of creating art is not just a profession, but a deeply personal and fulfilling endeavor.

What do you wish to tell viewers about your work that might not come out explicitly? What do you hope to inspire with your artwork?

One of my small goals as an artist is to create works that may not be explicitly communicated to the viewer. This is especially true for my land art pieces, which may have an audience that includes nature, the universe, and the unseen world, and not just human beings. I believe that works of art have a life of their own, and after I create them, they may tell me or the viewer what they mean.

What advice would you give to the upcoming generation of artists?

My advice to the upcoming generation of artists would be to do whatever it is that you truly want to do. Don't be afraid to take risks, experiment, and explore new ideas. Art is about self-expression and there are no right or wrong answers, so trust your instincts and follow your passions.

In what direction would you like to see your career go in the next five years?

In the next five years, I would like to see my career continue to evolve and grow in exciting new directions. One of my main goals is to continue my art practice.
I also hope to expand my reach and visibility as an artist, by showcasing my work in more exhibitions, galleries, and art events around the world.
In addition to my own creative work, I am also interested in exploring more opportunities to collaborate with other artists, scientists, and researchers, to create interdisciplinary projects that explore the intersection of art and science.
