What’s your background?
I was born in Montreal, Canada and have spent half of my life living all over the world. While working at the Canadian National railway in Montreal, I studied marketing/advertising & graphic design at Concordia University's CCE. My experience with graphic design is visible in my work and continues to influence my art. From a young age, I loved to draw and create award-winning art. In 1996, I left the corporate world to join my fiancé in Switzerland and since then we have travelled extensively and lived all over the world. It was at that time, on our first international assignment in Seoul, South Korea, I met my mentor a renownedKorean artist, who helped me to explore my creative process and began to paint seriously. It was where I believe I became a “true” artist and developed my own distinctive style and had my first solo exhibition in 2002. It was through living abroad and traveling that I found my calling and began my wonderful artistic journey and never looked back.
What does it mean to you to win the Collectors Art Prize?
It is very exciting and inspiring to win this prize. I am very honoured and proud to have been selected and it is a wonderful opportunity for me to be able to exhibit some of my artwork to a large international audience in the Contemporary Art Curator Magazine. It is not always an easy task as an artist to be able to showcase our work internationally and the Collector's Art Prize is a great opportunity. It is wonderful work the Magazine does to promote and support emerging and established artists worldwide connecting us and our artwork with art professionals.
What do you think is the role of art in the world today?
Art is a personal experience with each person interacting and being impacted differently by the same piece of art. This is why it plays such an influential and prominent role in our lives and world. Art provides beauty and inspiration to the world; it makes us feel ameliorated by using the power of color and composition to affect our moods. It allows us to travel and escape to somewhere new or special, and pushes our perception of our world into something more.
What would it be if you could change one thing about the art world?
I think often the art world unfortunately is sometimes dictated by specific trends and influenced also by social media rankings, which more often than not promotes the newest commercial vogues and leaves many talented artists underrepresented. I think we lose too many wonderful and talented artists to the reality of not being able to fully support themselves and expose their work and end up not pursuing their artistic dreams and goals.
What are your most significant professional achievements?
I am very pleased and honoured winning the 2023 Collectors Art Prize. I am also proud of the many international exhibitions I have participated in and being selected as a finalist and semi-finalist. It was a great honour to have been selected as an artist to hand paint an Adirondack Chair for auction for the Canadian Cancer Society, and then being interviewed on the CTV Ottawa Morning Show and featured in the national newspaper. Other notable achievements include being featured on several art sites, having one of my paintings selected for different book covers and commercial greeting cards (e.g., Trader Joe's) and having 2 of my travel paintings be the advert theme for the ESHG (European Society of Human Genetics) international conferences held in Copenhagen and Paris. It has also been a great reward to have some of my European travel themed paintings licensed worldwide for calendars.
What do you wish to tell viewers about your work that might not come out explicitly? What do you hope to inspire with your artwork?
Much of my artwork is inspired from my world travels and reflects the unique beauty and vibe of the places I visit. I like to capture the essence of the architecture and landscape, to stylize it, to play with the perspective and color making it my own. I want my work to captivate my viewers and have them experience the energy of color and harmony that transcend from my paintings. I want the viewer to explore the details of my compositions and narrative of my work. I want them to feel my affection in each piece created and the places I have travelled. I know I have achieved my goal when my painting makes you smile!
What advice would you give to the upcoming generation of artists?
Follow your dreams, practice and more practice, explore different mediums, don't give up, show up and stay true to yourself and most importantly develop your own personal style! And remember to enjoy the creative process and have fun!
In what direction would you like to see your career go in the next five years?
There is not much that I want to change regarding my style and artwork. My goal is to always to stay true to myself and for my paintings to bring joy and reach the people who appreciate my style and the process in which I create my work. I want to keep on creating and being surprised during the painting process with what each piece will bring and to keep on learning and exploring thru the creative process. I am also looking forward to more travels and revealing new ideas I have lined up for new paintings and future exhibitions.
